Renting the wrong-size dumpster is one of the most common (and most expensive) mistakes people make on home projects. Get one too small and you're paying for a second pickup. Get one too big and you wasted money on capacity you didn't need.
Here's the honest, practical version of how to pick a dumpster size — based on the projects we see every week across Pinal and Maricopa County.
The 4 sizes we offer (and what each is built for)
7-Yard Concrete Bin
This is a specialty bin reinforced for heavy, dense materials. It's only for concrete, brick, asphalt, dirt, rock, and sand. The smaller footprint matters because these materials are heavy — a full 7-yard of concrete can weigh 5+ tons, which is more than a 30-yard would hold of general debris.
Best for: driveway demolition, small patio tear-outs, removing a concrete slab, hauling off dirt from a landscape job.
15-Yard Roll-Off
The smallest of our general-purpose dumpsters. Holds about 4 pickup-truck loads of debris and includes 2 tons of disposal weight.
Best for: single-room remodels (kitchen or bath), garage cleanouts, deck removal, small roofing jobs, attic clear-outs, yard waste from a landscape project.
20-Yard Roll-Off
Our most popular size — about 6 pickup loads and 2 tons included. Fits in most driveways without blocking the garage.
Best for: whole-home cleanouts, mid-size renovations, full roof replacements on average-size homes, large landscaping projects, real-estate prep cleanouts.
30-Yard Roll-Off
The big one. About 9 pickup loads, 3 tons included, and needs a bigger placement footprint.
Best for: major construction projects, full home renovations, commercial cleanouts, large estate cleanouts, big roofing jobs on multi-story homes.
How to actually pick the right size
Skip the math. The easiest method is to ask yourself two questions:
1. What are you throwing in?
Heavy materials (concrete, dirt, brick) go in the 7-yard concrete bin — period. Mixing them with general debris in a regular roll-off creates two problems: you'll hit your tonnage allowance fast, and the landfill may reject the load.
For general debris (drywall, lumber, furniture, appliances, yard waste, roofing), pick from the 15, 20, or 30 yard sizes.
2. How big is the project?
Think in terms of rooms, not yards:
- 1 room or garage → 15-yard
- Multiple rooms or whole-house → 20-yard
- Full demo or construction → 30-yard
If you're between sizes, go bigger. The price difference between a 15 and a 20-yard is small. The cost of needing a second pickup because you ran out of space is not.
Common mistakes to avoid
Underestimating cleanout volume
People consistently underestimate how much stuff fits in a garage or attic. If you're emptying a garage you've been filling for 10 years, get the 20-yard. You'll thank us.
Mixing concrete with general debris
We see this a lot. Someone rents a 20-yard for a kitchen remodel but throws in a few wheelbarrows of concrete from a patio they busted up. That concrete blows past your 2-ton allowance and triggers overage fees. Always use a dedicated concrete bin for heavy materials.
Forgetting about driveway space
The 30-yard is long. If your driveway is short or curved, it may not fit. Measure your driveway or send us photos when you book — we'll tell you what'll work.
